Have you ever sat down to watch the 6pm news and come across Barack Obama giving a speech to his people? He is an extremely talented speaker. Do you wish that you too could speak in front of others with such confidence and charisma?
This is what we are all about at the Massey Toastmasters club. We are a friendly group of students, staff and friends of Massey University with a common goal of improving our public speaking skills. Through participation in Toastmasters members gain confidence, communication skills and leadership skills.
Toastmasters is an international organisation with thousands of clubs around the world (but don’t worry, it’s not cult!). There are 230 clubs in New Zealand and 8 here in the Manawatu. Our club is based at Massey University. We meet every Wednesday from 12pm-1pm (during the university common break).
Meetings are designed to be fun, supportive and educational. All members are encouraged to take on a role at each meeting. Roles include; Giving a prepared speech (from a manual), giving a short impromptu speech (scary, but lots of fun), evaluating somebody’s speech (it’s all supportive and encouraging – no nasty comments here), being timekeeper, introducing a word of the day, and chairing various parts of a meeting.
Once you’ve delivered ten prepared speeches to the group you are awarded a Competent Communicator award from Toastmasters International, which looks great in your CV. In addition to this you can earn a Competent Leadership award by taking part in various meeting roles.
Ultimately it’s a lot of fun, its good for you, and there is a lot to be learned. Guests are always welcome to attend. Bring your lunch and watch a meeting or two before deciding if toastmasters is right for you.
